Social Media Specialist, Breaking News
Democracy Docket is the leading digital news platform dedicated to information, analysis and opinion about voting rights and elections in the courts. Our audience of over 1 million subscribers and followers rely on Democracy Docket for real-time, accurate news about the legal landscape affecting the right to vote and American democracy. We’re seeking a Social Media Specialist for Breaking News to help ensure our readers never miss a critical update.
This role focuses on delivering rapid updates on litigation, voting rights, elections and other relevant news events. Responsibilities include drafting and posting breaking news content, providing live coverage of hearings and proceedings and collaborating with news and case teams to share critical updates. The position requires strong writing skills, the ability to work under tight deadlines and a deep understanding of social media. Ideal candidates will have 2-3 years of experience in a fast-paced communications or news environment, particularly in areas related to voting, elections or democracy reform.
Responsibilities
- Execute Democracy Docket’s social media strategy for rapid response and breaking news content across assigned platforms (primarily X, BlueSky, Threads, Facebook and YouTube Communities).
- Draft and post real-time news content on litigation updates, breaking voting and election news, legislation and other relevant, significant events.
- Provide live coverage of litigation hearings, congressional proceedings and other public forums on social media, offering real-time updates and insights.
- Collaborate with the case team to plan, create and publish litigation-specific updates on social platforms, ensuring timely communication during critical moments.
- Monitor assigned social media platforms (X, BlueSky, Threads, Facebook and YouTube Communities) for breaking news, developments and relevant events to inform content strategy and audience engagement.
- Utilize data and analytics to optimize content performance and inform rapid response strategies.
- Assist and support the social media manager as needed.
- Performs other related duties and projects.
Required skills
- Strong understanding of litigation, voting and elections with a particular focus on voting rights, election admin, redistricting and democracy.
- Proven experience in social media, particularly for rapid response and breaking news on platforms like X.
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to craft clear, concise and compelling social media copy under tight deadlines.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with the flexibility to shift focus quickly in response to breaking news or emerging issues.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
- Experience managing high-pressure, time-sensitive situations on social media.
- Familiarity with social media analytics tools a plus.
Education and Experience
- At least 2-3 years of experience in a relevant social media, communications or news role, ideally in a fast-paced environment such as a political campaign or newsroom.
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
This is a full-time role based in our Washington, D.C office. We currently offer a hybrid schedule: Monday and Friday are remote, and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are in-office days. The salary range for this role is $68,000-$80,000. Final compensation will be based on relevant work experience and skill-level. Democracy Docket is pleased to offer additional benefits, including:

Director of People Operations
Democracy Docket is seeking a Director of People to join our leadership team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of a rapidly growing 16+ person team in a mission-driven organization. You will play a key role in overseeing the full range of people operations, including talent acquisition, employee experience, performance management, compensation and benefits and organizational culture. This person will foster a high-performance, inclusive and supportive work environment that aligns with Democracy Docket’s mission, values and business objectives.
Responsibility
- Build a people operations infrastructure and manage day-to-day functions to support a rapidly growing team.
- Oversee the employee life cycle process, from recruiting and hiring to onboarding and development to offboarding.
- Lead the design and implementation of performance management systems, including feedback channels, evaluation touchpoints and annual review process. Develop initiatives to ensure continuous growth and development for all employees.
- Manage and ensure competitive and equitable pay structures and benefits offerings across all roles.
- Ensure compliance with labor laws, organizational policies and HR best practices.
- Develop and implement strategies that promote a positive employee experience. Foster an environment where employees feel heard, valued and supported.
- Support the growth and development of managers by offering tools, training and resources to help them lead effectively and foster positive team dynamics.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee concerns or grievances. Address issues with discretion and professionalism, ensuring alignment with company policies and legal requirements.
- Work closely with the leadership team to align people operations strategies and structures with organizational goals.
- Foster a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, innovation and efficiency across all teams, ensuring alignment with Democracy Docket’s objectives and values.
Skills:
- 6+ years of experience in Human Resources or People Operations, with a proven track record of leadership and team development.
- Experience in media or political sectors is a plus, particularly in fast-paced, changing environments.
- Strong understanding of HR best practices, including talent acquisition, compensation and benefits and performance management.
- Experience using a PEO platform a plus.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization.
- A strategic thinker with the ability to balance long-term planning with day-to-day operations.
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity and inclusion within the workplace.
- Exceptional communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- A flexible, proactive approach to management.
