Arizona Navajo Nation Poll Hours Extension Request

Navajo Nation v. Noble

Lawsuit filed by Navajo Nation against the Apache County’s Recorder, Elections Director and Board of Supervisors seeking to extend in-person voting hours on Election Day from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in polling places on the Navajo Reservation in Apache County. Navajo polling locations in the county experienced late openings, voting machine malfunctions, lack of printed ballots, lack of provisional ballots, long lines and failure to accept adequate ID. In addition to the extended hours, the plaintiff asked for Apache County to allow voters who arrive between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to vote provisionally, count out-of-precinct ballots that were not cast on accessible voting machines because of machine malfunction, and provide public notice of the extended hours.

RESULT: Navajo Nation filed its complaint on Nov. 5, 2024. The judge ordered nine locations to remain open until 9 p.m.
