Georgia Fulton County Election Records Access Challenge
Adams v. Williams
Lawsuit filed by Julie Adams, a Republican member of the Fulton County Board of Elections, against the board’s director, Nadine Williams, challenging Williams’ refusal to provide Adams access to records related to the 2024 general election. All members of the board of elections will have access to an approved list of documents including voter lists by precinct and a list of the scanners used to process absentee ballots. Adams has additionally requested access to daily reports on complaints from election workers, poll observers and voters. She also wanted to receive all election records electronically. Williams and fellow board members rejected these requests because the board does not keep records of every complaint and expressed security and privacy concerns over producing records on voter data electronically.
In a separate case, Adams sought and was granted a ruling that she, as a member of the county board of elections, has the right to inspect all election-related documents under state law. Although she appealed that ruling on different grounds, she argues that Williams’ refusal to provide her with copies of these records violates that order. She asks the court to order Williams to provide her with access to the materials she has requested.
RESULT: On Nov. 4, 2024, a judge denied Adams’ request, ruling that Adams’ appeal in her other case paused the order granting her a legal right to access all records related to Fulton County elections. Adams will not receive these records.
