North Carolina Election Protests Challenge
North Carolina Democratic Party v. North Carolina State Board of Elections
Lawsuit filed by the North Carolina Democratic Party against the North Carolina State Board of Elections and its members seeking an order banning the board from rejecting thousands of ballots cast in the 2024 election. The party claims that Republican candidate for the North Carolina Supreme Court, Judge Jefferson Griffin, filed 307 election protests challenging over 60,000 ballots cast in the 2024 election on top of additional challenges filed by Republican candidates for three legislative seats. The party argues these mass challenges violate the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), the First and 14th Amendments and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). The party asks the court to prohibit the state board from rejecting the challenged ballots.
STATUS: The North Carolina Democratic Party filed its complaint on Dec. 6, 2024.
