Ohio Montgomery County Noncitizen Photo ID Training Challenge
Strbich v. Montgomery County Board of Elections
Lawsuit filed by a poll worker against the Montgomery County Board of Elections and all of its members challenging the board’s failure to offer proper photo ID training to county poll workers ahead of the November 2024 general election. The poll worker claims that the training offered by the board to county election officials failed to include guidance on what forms of photo ID are unacceptable in the state, including photo IDs that are issued to noncitizens. The poll worker argues this violates Directive 2024-09 — a June 2024 guidance released by the Ohio secretary of state directing the state’s counties to prepare for the November election and provide proper training to poll workers. They ask the Ohio Supreme Court to order the board to offer the mandatory photo ID training that addresses unacceptable photo IDs, including photo IDs issued to noncitizens.
RESULT: On Oct. 11, 2024, the Ohio Supreme Court ordered Montgomery county to provide amended training compliant with Directive 2024-09 to local election workers who were trained on or before Sept. 25, 2024.
