Tennessee Voter Registration Rejections Challenge
Tennessee Black Voter Project v. Shelby County Election Commission
Lawsuit brought on behalf of the Tennessee Black Voter Project, NAACP Memphis Branch and individual voters demanding access to the high number of voter registration forms that the Shelby County Election Commission deemed incomplete or invalid; plaintiffs sought to cute the registration forms. The lawsuit sought injunctive relief requiring the Shelby County Election Commission to immediately notify voters whose registration forms were rejected that they can cure defects on or before Election Day, as the county was required to do under state statute. The district court granted the requested relief and the Tennessee Supreme Court affirmed.
