A former attorney for Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign, who allegedly led an attempt to submit a false slate of Georgia electors to help the former president win reelection, was suspended from practicing law in New York.

The New York Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, which handles attorney disciplinary cases, suspended Kenneth Chesebro indefinitely on Thursday in connection with his criminal case in Fulton County, Georgia.

In that case, Chesebro pleaded guilty last year to a felony count of conspiracy to file false documents. Democracy Docket reached out to Chesebro for comment.

Thursday’s order notes that the attorney grievance committee, which governs attorney conduct, may seek discipline against an attorney following the conviction of a crime. “Upon an attorney’s conviction for a felony (either in or outside of New York) the attorney ceases to be competent to practice law.”

In arguing against the suspension, Chesebro said that even though he pleaded guilty, the judgment in his Georgia case is not yet final, according to the filing. The court disagreed, finding that records show the court rendered a conviction against Chesebro and directed him “to complete a five-year term of probation.”

The matter is pending until the court issues a final order of discipline.

Chesebro currently faces a single charge of forgery in Wisconsin, for his alleged role in a scheme to send fake electors to Congress in order to subvert the results of the election. He and other Trump lawyers have faced professional and criminal discipline for their efforts to help Trump try to subvert the 2020 election results.

Former New York City mayor and Trump ally Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in New York in July, and was disbarred in Washington, D.C., in September.
